Escorts in Windsor, SL4: the trip out from town, agreed in writing

Late on a winter afternoon, once the castle has closed its gates for the day, the short streets under its wall go back to the town: a house by the Guildhall leaning at an angle nobody straightens, cobbles underfoot in Church Street, and lit windows running down Peascod Street. That small knot of streets is the best walk in Windsor for two people with an evening in front of them, because it needs no map, no timetable and no ticket. SL4 is a long way from any home on the board, so Windsor escorts come out by road or rail, and the office agrees the travel and any minimum with you in writing on WhatsApp before the evening is fixed; the hours themselves are on the rates.

Note 02

Round the Guildhall and into the lanes

Begin on the High Street at the Guildhall, finished under Sir Christopher Wren in the late seventeenth century. Its ground floor is an open arcade on columns, and the story the town tells is that the councillors demanded more columns than Wren thought necessary, so he left the inner ones a fraction short of the ceiling they were supposed to hold up. Beside it are two of Windsor's curiosities: Queen Charlotte Street, often called the shortest street in Britain, which you have walked before you have finished reading its sign, and Market Cross House, which leans so plainly out of true that the town simply calls it the crooked house.

Behind them the old town starts. Church Street is narrow and cobbled, lined with old houses, and runs from the High Street towards the castle, so that the stonework rises ahead of you as you go. The parish church of St John the Baptist stands on the High Street, and between the two the lanes are the quietest part of the centre once the day is over. Three of the hotels on this page's list are on the High Street itself, so from any of them the walk begins at the front door.

Note 03

Down Peascod Street and round by the barracks

The second half turns away from the castle. Peascod Street, the main shopping street, runs downhill from the High Street, and after dark its lit windows make it the livelier side of the centre. To the south of the town centre, Sheet Street passes Victoria Barracks, home of the guardsmen who mount the guard at the castle; on the mornings the guard changes, a band marches them up through the town. At night it is only a long wall and a quiet road, and the High Street is easily regained from there, closing the loop. Escorts in Windsor come dressed for a walk as readily as for a table; say which the evening is when you write.

For another evening, Eton across the river has a walk of its own over the bridge, and Datchet, a stop along the line towards Waterloo, is a village by the Thames.

Asked most often

Windsor, asked and answered

Why do some of the Guildhall's columns not reach the ceiling?
The story is that the council insisted on extra columns and Wren, sure they were not needed, left the inner ones just short of the ceiling. The gap is small, but it is there to see from the pavement.
How short is Queen Charlotte Street?
A little under fifty two feet, which is why the town calls it the shortest street in Britain. It is beside the Guildhall, and a couple of dozen strides take you from one end to the other.
Is the old town still worth walking once the shops have shut?
Yes, and it is arguably better then. The lanes behind the Guildhall are at their quietest after dark, the castle walls are above you, and Peascod Street stays lit for the walk back.
